From our point of view the film of the gig was a huge learning process. We had never filmed a gig before, we had never edited a live performance and we had never recorded live sound before. We did the whole thing for free and the band let us get on with it without interference. In some ways this was ultimately a problem since there wasn't really any help forthcoming from the band or their sound crew in terms of recording the sound the quality of which was probably not up to the their high standards. Although we thought it was pretty damn good given the technology we had available to us. |

Some of the images we got from the stageside camera are classic Cardiacs/Tim in action and the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd were brilliant. We cut the whole 1 and a half hours on our pretty basic editing kit back in Portsmouth and Tim, Sarah and Tim Quy popped down on a couple of occasions to see how things were going. |

Around about May of 1985 we delivered the finished tape to Tim and the Consultant. The first reactions were good and we began to talk about other projects we might get involved in. Whether the sound quality wasn't good enough or the picture quality and limitation of only having two cameras wasn't good enough or whether Tim wasn't happy with their performance I don't know, but the Surbiton Gig video quietly slipped into oblivion and was never released. |

We kind of forgot about it because we had already started planning Seaside Treats. I have a VHS tape of half of the edited concert, a cassette tape of the whole soundtrack and somewhere (possibly in Mark Francombe's Dad's loft) are the original U-Matic Masters and the two track reel to reel of the concert. Must get up there and have a look! |
